MDSP2780
DSP System-On-A-Chip
"The MDSP2780 is the most feature-rich multifunction DSP available
for multimedia. It is the only programmable DSP on the market with integral
Sound Blaster support and sophisticated modem and communications functionality
- features that will command the attention of both sound board makers and
modem vendors. IBM is serious about being a force in the multimedia chip
marketplace."
Will Strauss
President, Forward Concepts
MDSP2780 is a new digital signal process for the Mwave family
of products that, for the first time in the industry, incorporates the
entire DSP logic subsystem on a single chip.
New on-chip features include a full suite of multimedia interfaces,
high speed analog and digital communication support, extended audio and
voice CODEC ports, hardware-level support for industry standard games,
including Sound BlasterÖ applications, and a 32 voice wave table synthesizer.
The MDSP2780 fits seamlessly into all Mwave software products and
development tools to fully exploit the audio, fax/modem, voice and images
capabilities of the Mwave system.
Superior Standards Support
- 32 voice wave table synthesizer
- Hardware support for Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro applications
- MPU-401 compatible MIDI port
- Supports all Windows Sound SystemÖ 2.0 applications
- 28.8k (V.34) modem enabled
- Special effects processing
A Full Suite of Interface
- Glueless interface for Crystal Semiconductor's 16-bit stereo audio
CODECs (CS4215, CS4216, CS4231A)
- Direct serial port provides extended support for AICs, audio and voice
band CODECs and general purpose chips with software configurable modes

The Mwave DSP
- 16-bit fixed point engine
- High performance MDSP2000 series, 3-phase pipeline core delivering
up to 99 MOPS (million operations per second)
- Three different fixed operating speeds (17, 20, and 25 MIPS) provided
by on-board PLLs
- With an external oscillator source, operates at any frequency from
17 MIPS up to 33 MIPS
- Addresses up to 32K of off-chip data and program store
- Power dissipation:
- Nominal Operation - 120mA
- Peak Operation - 200 mA
- Suspend - 5mA
- Sleep as low as 20 mA
- 240-pin plastic flat pack (PFP)
The MDSP2780 Advantage - The Value of Integration
- Significantly reduces board space
- Less components = less cost
- Shared resources on chip = lower cost
- Best in class power management
- Provides OEM's the opportunity to differentiate their products
- Maximum flexibility for implementing jumperless designs
